Modelling erosion and deposition in geophysical granular mass flows

چکیده
During hazardous geophysical mass flows, such as rock or snow avalanches, debris flows and volcanic pyroclastic a continuous exchange of material can occur between the slide bed. The net balance erosion deposition particles drastically influence behaviour these flows. Recent advances in describing non-monotonic effective basal friction internal granular rheology depth averaged theories have enabled small scale laboratory experiments (see fig. 1) to be quantitatively reproduced also implemented large models improve hazard mitigation.

Erosion–deposition waves in shallow granular free-surface flows
Debris flows can spontaneously develop regular large-amplitude surge waves that are interspersed by periods in which the channel fill is completely stationary. These are important because each individual surge is much more destructive than a steady uniform flow with the same mass flux. In this paper small-scale experiments that exhibit similar behaviour are described. The flow consists of carbo...
متن کاملGranular mass flows and Coulomb’s friction in shear cell experiments: Implications for geophysical flows
[1] Granular mass flows of rock fragments are studied in the lab by means of a high-speed video camera at 2000 frames per second. These granular flows are generated using beds of pumice fragments positioned on a rough rotating disk, whose angular velocity is controlled by a motor. The experimental apparatus allows an understanding of the arrangement of the particles in granular mass flows with ...
متن کاملSubgrid modelling for geophysical flows.
Recently developed closure-based and stochastic model approaches to subgrid-scale modelling of eddy interactions are reviewed. It is shown how statistical dynamical closure models can be used to self-consistently calculate the eddy damping and stochastic backscatter parameters, required in large eddy simulations (LESs), from higher resolution simulations. A closely related direct stochastic mod...
متن کاملStochastic Modelling of Soil Erosion and Deposition
The rate of erosion is the product of the concentration of active soil aggregates and their mean vertical velocity. The sediment concentration for a given time is proportional to the probability of detachment of first-time mobilized soil aggregates and to the probability of the deposited sediments’ redetachment. The probability of soil aggregate activation is equal to the probability of the dri...
متن کاملSeveral Unresolved Issues in Numerical Modelling of Geophysical Flows
This paper discusses several issues in the numerical modelling of atmospheric flow which have been left unresolved. These include the influence of partial model resolution of features that are represented in a model by only a few grid points and the implication of this inadequacy in terms of the parametrization of subgrid-scale processes. As a result of nonlinear interactions, this lack of reso...
